Finalists Rely on SICK
SICK is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of sensors, safety systems and automatic identification products for industrial applications. During the 2005 Grand Challenge, all five finishing teams and the majority of the race finalists had SICK Laser Measurement System Sensors (LMS) mounted on their vehicles. Selecting a close-range obstacle sensor is not an easy decision when designing an autonomous vehicle. The sensor must be able to handle adverse weather conditions. The measured values should be accurate enough to determine location so that data can be transferred, manipulated, and distributed to the appropriate control output. LMS Laser Scanners from SICK are capable of meeting both criteria.
LMS Scanners operate by measuring the time of flight of a laser light pulse. The time between transmission and reception of the impulse is directly proportional to the distance between the scanner and the object. The two-dimensional scanners can transmit data at 500k baud and have an IP 65 enclosure rating.
